MASALA KOZHUKATTAI

Vinayagar Chathurthi, the first thing which comes to our mind is Kozhukattai :). Lord Ganesha's Favorite dish, not only for him Kozhukattai is most of our favorite dish. You may think, this is not Ganesha festival season then why she is talking about Kozhukattai.Yes, In many homes they prepare Kozhukattai only on Vinayagar Chathurthi day.But my mom prepares Kaara (Spicy) Kozhukattai as breakfast recipe on normal days and serves it with coconut chutney,it tastes very good.

I added few more ingredients with Kara(spicy) Kozhukattai recipe and prepared Masala Kozhukattai, the aroma, flavor and taste was too good.We had this Kozhukattai as tea time snack So I didn't prepare any chutney. But you can have this for breakfast along with coconut chutney.

Rice 1 Cup
Cumin seeds 1/2 tblsp
Black Pepper seeds 1/2 tblsp
Curry leaves 5- 6 nos

Mustard 1/2 tsp ( Optional)
Bengal gram 1 tsp
Urad dhal 1 tsp
Onion 1/2 Cup - Finely Chopped
Ginger 1/2 inch - Finely Chopped
Green Chilli's 2 -3 nos(As needed) - Finely Chopped
Salt                           As needed

Method:

1) Wash the rice fill enough water in the rice bowl to cover them about 2" deep. Soak for 2 - 3 hours.

2) After 2 - 3 hours, drain all the water from the rice. Now put the rice, salt, cumin seeds, pepper seeds and curry leaves in a food processor and grind - adding very little water if necessary - to a smooth yet slightly grainy paste.

3) In a pan add oil once it becomes hot add mustard wait till it splutters, then add Bengal gram, Urad dhal, Ginger, Green chillies and Onion. Saute the items till the onion turns to light golden color then mix the rice batter and the little amount of water used to wash the batter from food processor.

4) Mix well till it turns to a uppma consistency.

5) Switch off the stove and leave it for few minutes till the dough becomes warm from hot.

6) Add one cup of water in a idli vessel and switch on the stove.

7) Now grease idli plates and hand with oil and pinch a small portion of the dough and roll it to a ball, keep it in the palm and close finger tightly to make fist.

8) Arrange the shaped Kozhukattai's in the idli plate and steam it for 12-15 minutes or until the kozhukattai turns shiny and non sticky. You can use fork or spoon to check whether it is cooked well.

9) Once done switch off the stove and leave it for few minutes.

10) Then remove from the plate and its ready to serve hot.

 Note:

  • Instead of soaking and grinding  rice and you can also use Rice Flour
  • If you are using Rice flour, you can use Cumin powder and Pepper powder to get the masala taste
  • You can also use grated coconut, coriander leaves to the mixture
